LION AT PRISON III - It is more than a prison!

ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN
Time: 8.30am - 12.30pm
Date: 4th November 2012
Venue: Sungai Buloh Prison

Quite many of us do not like to have any kind of links with prison, perhaps it is due to the fact that many of us are still reluctant to forgive what the inmates have done before they are being sent here.

The prison authority is working hard on the PR work for the prison. The PR work may help to change the mindset of the public against the prison and the inmates as well.

With that in mind, the Lions Club of Sungai Buloh has supported the project with action. We have sponsored helmets for the Road Safety Campaign that organized by the Sungai Buloh Prison on 4th November 2012, Sunday. The programmer was assisted by the Road Transportation Department and involving students from four secondary schools around the area.

There were exhibition booths, pictures of horrible road accident scene, road safety briefing, drama presented by the inmates and so on that aimed to create awareness about road safety among the young road-users.

We shall support the community projects by the prison authority; it could add point to their PR effort. Prison is an institution that being entrusted by the government to re-educate the people who have once missed the direction of lives and committed some serious mistakes. However, it is not end of the world, they are given chance to ‘take 2’ or come again in their lives.

Negative mindset against the prisons and the ex-convicts would do no better to our society, but push them closer to the negative forces which would lead them back to the prisons; in other words, higher crime rate.

Our little effort to support the event is aimed to get more NGOs to work hand in hand with the prisons with an aim – one day, the public would accept the fact that prison is just another kind of School.

With Passion, We Serve.

LION-LEO Badminton Tournament

Lion-Leo Badminton Tournament
PCC Patrick Chew Cup
Date: 9th September 2012
Time: 9.00am-1.00pm
Venue : Energetic Sports Center

On the 9th September 2012 the inaugural PCC Patrick Chew Cup was contested at Energetic Sports Center in Seri Kembangen. This was a joint project between the Lion Clubs of Sungai Buloh, Damansara Metro, and Sunway. It was a badminton tournament open to all Lions and Leos to instill fellowship and connectivity amongst those participating through the love of the sport.

Despite the intention of the organizers for a gentle social gathering amongst Lions and Leos, once on court the competitive nature of those taking part came to the fore. The competition was fierce but friendly especially as there were 4 trophies on offer (Men &  Women's trophies in both the singles and doubles), however, I suspect amongst the Lions the bragging rights for the next couple of months amongst the members were more important.

A great time was had by all and by general consensus the tournament was a great success. Everyone was already looking forward to next year's PCC Patrick Chew Cup! The organizing clubs should pat themselves on the back for bringing together good fellowship where healthy competition and banter was enjoyed by everyone. Lets hope next year's cup will be bigger and better, but as a start this was a fantastic way to launch the tournament. Lets hope from small acorns come mighty oaks! See you next year!

5th Charity Golf Tournament 2012

Lions Club Of Sungai Buloh
5th Charity Golf Tournament
Date : 25th Oct 2012
Time : 12.30pm
Venue : Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah

On the 25th October 2012the Lions Club of Sungai Buloh held its 5th Charity Golf Tournament at Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah.

The golfing gods were smiling on those participating, the weather was beautiful, blue skies, sunny weather. However, little did we realize in less than 4 hours the rain would come and bring a halt to proceedings.

The massive downpour accompanied with thunder and lightning meant the tournament had to be abandoned. The result was to be decided by lucky draw. This ensured almost full attendance at the dinner buffet and prize giving as even the worse golfer on the day had a chance to become our champion!

Despite the poor weather everyone taking part appeared to have a good time and pleased to all receive a generous goodie bag as well as everyone receiving a gift in the lucky draw.

Our thanks to the generous sponsors and players in making the 5th tournament such a success. We managed to donate RM7000 to Praise Emmanuel Children's Home, and RM5000 each to Hospice Malaysia and Kasih Hospis Care Society.

Another Hugely Beneficial Health Forum For Seniors
Date: 29th July 2012 (Sunday)

Time: 10am-1.30pm
Venue: Pertubuhan Warga Emas Sungai Buloh

Getting the senior folks to attend a Health Forum is never an easy task. Especially if it is the second One at the same Venue i.e.The Sungai Buloh Senior Citizens Club.

Dr Gan Ing Earn, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Internal Medicine Physician of Tropicana Medical Centre volunteered to give a Talk on Helicobacter Pylori, Hepatitis, Liver Cancer as well as give a Brief Overview about Internal Medicine.

Dr Tong Sheau Wann
, an experienced General Surgeon from Ampang Hospital covered another hot topic, Breast Cancer. With the generous support from The Tropicana Medical Centre, a General Health Screening Service was provided to those who attended the Forum, and a Voucher for a Health Check worth RM255 was given to all those who attended the Session.

The Forum was conducted in Chinese Language (Mandarin), and was made as simple as possible for any lay person to understand. The interaction between the Speakers and the Audience was excellent and was just oozing with curiosity and interest. Dr Gan and Dr Tong were surrounded by the audience even long after the Session. They were just too many questions to ask and the two Doctors portrayed their selfless and generous spirit by patiently answering and interacting with those present.

The crowd of almost a hundred was a tough lot to handle for personalized interaction. Yet, the calibre of such doctors like Dr Gan and Dr Tong, showed how concern from the heart can go a long way to touch and transform lives. Kudos to you, Dr Gan and Dr Tong, the world definitely needs more and more true community-centred professionals like you! Thanks Beyond Words for your sacrifice and exemplary patience!

We invited Renown Ln Roger Phuang as our Orientation Trainer on this project due to his unique skills and experience in running Orientation Programmes. In addition, we had Ln Royce Ng, the Youth Exchange Chairperson, who briefed the Leos about matters related to Youth Exchange. Among the objectives of having this Orientation was to train the New Leos to become Active Member who will eventually become Great Lion Leaders in the near future. Moreover, it set the foundations to promote service activities among the youth of the community, so as to help them develop their individual qualities of Leadership, Experience and How To Tap Their talents and the numerous Opportunities that come their way in life. This also served as an excellent platform for  "Leos and Lion Clubs" to unite their members and boost the level of friendship, fellowship and mutual understanding.

Among the many interesting Presentations was a Journey Down Memory Lane, as participants got to know our Club's History, Projects and Social Activities etc. This was followed up with various Activities, Q&A Sessions, other Video Presentations and Team Building Games which was interspersed with F&B Breaks. The Orientation ended with a Special Insight-filled Talk.  Based on the positive feedback from many participants, the SMK Seafield Alpha Leos & the Sungai Buloh Omega Leos gained a lot of knowledge regarding the history, objectives and projects that are in store to make membership in the Leo Clubs, truly interesting and even more exciting in the future!

Down Lions' Memory Lane – 2011-2012

Down Lions' Memory Lane – 2011-2012
I treasure sweet old memories
when We Served Together.
Time goes swiftly by,
Some bring smiles of happiness
And others bring tears to our eyes.

They are all precious in their own way,
Re-opening doors of yesterday
That have been shut this past fiscal year of 2011/2012
What pictures they unfold!

These dear Lions Club Members,
This past year's memories
All play their special part
In bringing joy and opening up
The passionate strings of the heart.

Project: Sinar Harapan Project
Date: 2nd June 2012
Venue: Kuala Kubu Bharu

On 2nd June 2012, a Follow-up Activity Project was conducted. We returned to Taman Sinar Harapan, the home for some 215 disabled residents in Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor. It was a very meaningful, emotional and eventful visit. The Lions, Leo & Lion Club’s Family members & friends of the Lions Club also joined in and were all touched to see the plight and condition of the inmates. The inmates inspired us with their determination and perseverance to live normal lives despite their handicap. We donated 600 diapers & bath towels to the home.

Project: Orang Asli Project
Date: 2nd June 2012
Venue: Kuala Kubu Bharu

In our quest to reach out to new segments of society, we the Lions Club of Sungai Buloh undertook to visit the Kampung Orang Asli Buluh Telur at Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor on Saturday, 2nd June 2012, together with Lions’ family members.

A settlement of 35 families comprising some 130 Orang Asli (Malay for “natives”) have occupied this area for more than one hundred years. The Orang Asli live simply, without the trappings of modern society. They hunt for meat and grow their own greens. We donated essential food items and used clothes. Our objective is to show a caring attitude and concern, also to look into the day to day needs of these people.

Fraser’s Hill Fellowship
